The brand new Hobie Island Spinnaker/Reacher Kit is a spinnaker that improves downwind sailing performance when reaching or running. The Hobie Island spinnaker kit includes a snuffer launching/retrieving sock that makes handling the sail a breeze... To operate the reacher, pull on the halyard line to launch it, or ease off on the halyard and pull the retrieval line to douse it. The reacher kit also includes a mast top wind direction indicator. Comes with everything you need including hardware and installation instructions.
Note: Spinnakers can be difficult for novice sailors to rig/sail, especially on windy days. We recommend rigging and testing the kit out on land before trying it out with light winds on the water.
Spinnaker was shipped very quickly and arrived on time before the weekend. Thank you.
Purchase the Tandem Island version. Installed it last week. Adds a ton of performance to the TI when heading downwind at the cost of a small amount of visibility. The snuffer sock works really well and it is quite easy to retrieve the sail in short order. Thanks for shipping out my spinnaker fast. Ordered on Tuesday, arrived on Thursday.
I bought this for my 2015 Tandem Island. Like Harry mentions below, be sure to mount the cheek block close to the rear aka plate. I was having some trouble with the installation and Preston was nice enough to stay with me on the line for 40 minutes! I'd imagine that the installation is a little easier for the Adventure Island. I do not regreat buying from Southwinds. Very fast shipping to LA as well. The stock TI is not an impressive performer downwind and this really helps. The sail is really easy to deploy and douse and stays in a low profile package when not in use. The kit has a wind indicator on it as well, so if you purchase this, you do not need to purchase the Hobie wind indicator that mounts to the top of the mast. Note: The first halyard line we received was too short, which caused a heck of a lot of confusion when I was trying to install it. This was due to a mistake at the Hobie factory. Southwind shipped us a new line from Hobie before I even asked them about it, and I was using the kit before the weekend began. If you bought one of the first presses of this kit then your line might be too short. The new ones should be ok.
Installed great on my Hobie Adventure Island. Make sure to watch the youtube video that hobie put up. The installation instructions for the AI were fairly simple and clear. Works great in winds under 15 knts. Definitely a performance boost. It really shines downwind when you can run it "wing and wing." It does add some rigging time however. Not too much, maybe about 10 min once you get the hang of it. Good stuff, much better than my homemade one!
Installation is pretty straightforward. Adding this thing will increase your rigging time a bit before you head out on the water, but it is great for days where the wind is less than 15 knots. Over that and its a bit overpowered-- might as well just use the main sail (less complicated). Where I live however, the winds can really die down in the summer and having this really helps. Installation was easy, just look up some guides online.
