For two decades, Hobie Cat has distinguished themselves on building the finest pedal drive kayaks available today. Whether you are using them for fishing, sailing or just a fun day out on the water, there is a right Hobie kayak for you. Here are some questions to ask yourself before purchasing your first Hobie Mirage kayak.
Smaller Mirage kayaks such as the Hobie Sport and Revolution 11 are suited for smaller paddlers such as children and smaller women. Middle sized kayaks such as the Hobie Revolution 13 and Outback will fit a multitude of adult sized paddlers. The Pro Angler series of kayaks are suited to bigger and taller paddlers. The Mirage drives on all Hobie kayaks can also be adjusted, allowing for a proper fit to your leg length.
If you are a fisherman, kayaks such as the Pro Angler and Outback series are rich in features such as rod holders, tackle storage and easy fish finder integration. If you are using your kayak for fitness paddling, these features would be as useful for you. For those looking to get into kayak sailing, boats such as the Island series or Revolution 13 offer superior sailing performance both upwind and downwind.
If you have a roof rack, smaller to medium sized kayaks like the Revolution and Outback are easier to load. Trucks are an excellent option and will pretty much make easy loading of almost all the Hobie kayaks. Short bed trucks can also utilize a hitch extender to cradle the rear of your kayak.
Heavier kayaks such as the Pro Angler 17T and Hobie Tandem Island are best suited to a trailer set up or perhaps a rear loader such as the Rhino Rack T Loader. For those of us with small vehicles that cannot accept a roof rack or trailer, the fold-able Hobie Inflatable series is a great option.
If you are using your kayak as a double kayak more than 60% of the time, then the Hobie Oasis, Outfitter and Inflatable I14T are great options for you. These kayaks can be soloed, but if this is a regular occurrence, you would be better off with a dedicated single person Hobie Mirage kayak.
For those of us who like to go fishing with our buddies, it's nice to be able to keep up with them on the water! If the rest of my fishing group are using smaller, nimbler kayaks, then I might want a faster one as well. On the other hand, if everyone is using heavier, feature rich kayaks such as the Pro Angler series, then you do not want to be constantly outpacing them!
