We offer:
- On-the-water kayak, canoe and SUP rentals, by the hour or full day, at our Newport Rental Base.
- Full day and multi-day kayak, canoe and SUP take-away rentals from our Irvine Store.
- Convenient on-the-water kayak storage space rental at our Newport Rental Base.
On-the-water Rentals at our Newport Rental Base
Our competitive rental rates start as low as $14 per hour & $50 per day!
- Rentals are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, or you can reserve a specific model in advance!
- Rent kayaks by the hour, or all day.
- Single and double sit-insides, sit-on-tops, pedal boats, and standup paddleboards (SUPs) are available.
- Hit the water within minutes with the assistance of our friendly and helpful rental staff!
- Parking at the Newport Rental Center is FREE (located on a dirt area under the Pacific Coast Highway Bridge). Please be careful not to park in any areas near our Rental Base that have signs suggesting private parking.
- Rental Policies
If you would like to request a specific kayak model on reserve for your rental, please call our store (949-261-0200) at least ONE (1) day in advance to make your reservation. Our rental staff will do their best to reserve the selected kayaks and have them ready for you upon arrival.
Reservations are highly recommended when:
- You have a group of more than eight paddlers
- You are renting on a weekend – particularly during our busy Summer season
- You are renting on a Holiday
- You want a specific model of boat

Full-day and Multi-day Rentals (Irvine Store)
- Craft are available for day or multi-day take-away rentals.
- Rent and try a wide variety of kayaks not normally available at the Newport Rental Base.
- Single and double sea kayaks, recreational sit-insides, sit-on-tops and pedal boats are available.
- Standard basic paddling gear provided with your rental.
- Hit the road quickly with the assistance of our friendly and helpful staff!
- Find those needed accessories in our well-stocked store as you pick up your rental.
- Rental Policies
The craft we rent from the retail center are utilized for a variety of lessons, trips and rentals at various locations. To assure availability of the models you want, when you want, please reserve well in advance. At least TWO (2) days advance notice is generally required.
$100 Rental Credit Toward Purchase!
We will credit you up to $100 rental fee toward the purchase of a new none discounted kayak or standup paddleboard over $400. Credit of up to $20 rental fee can be applied toward the purchase of an used or discounted kayak or standup paddleboard. Credit will be applied for rental fees incurred during the 30 days prior to your boat purchase, one rental per day per boat purchased.

- You lock your own boat.
- Your boat is available during regular operating hours.
- Under 26" wide: $35 per month, or $30 per month if you prepay three months.
- Over 26" wide: $45 per month, or $40 per month if you prepay three months.
Rental Policies
General Policies:
- Rental reservations are held when full payment is received. Advance payment by check or credit card helps you get on the water faster.
- A $10 cleaning fee will be charged for any boat not returned in clean condition. Renter is responsible for returning all gear in the same condition as rented.
- Each paddler must sign a liability release and statement of responsibility before taking a boat. A parent must sign for anyone under 18.
- A properly approved and fitted life jacket must be worn when using any of our kayaks, canoes or standup boards. Life jackets are supplied with all rentals.
- While Southwind is not responsible for evaluating a paddler's skill or ability, or determining their route and destination, we reserve the right to refuse rentals to those individuals whose skills do not seem suitable for their intended outing.
- All craft rented from the Rental Base are for in-harbor, day use only, and may not be car-topped.
- Boats rented from the Kayak Center (store) may be used on bays, lakes, and ocean, but never on whitewater rivers or at the Channel Islands.
Cancellations:
- Hourly and all-day on-water rentals at the Newport Rental-Center: No-shows or cancellations within 24 hours of a reservation's start time result in loss of the rental fee. Cancellations more than 24 hours in advance will receive full credit toward a future rental. Sorry, no refunds.
- Day and multi-day take-away rentals through the Irvine Kayak-Center: No-shows or cancellations within 7 days of the rental start date result in loss of the rental fee. Cancellations made at least 8 days before the rental result in either a full credit toward a future rental, or in a refund less a 25% fee.
