Fishing from a kayak is always better if you have paddling skills that match the environment you are paddling in.
In a small protected area just about anyone can paddle around and fish from their kayak. However, the larger the body of water, the more important it will be to have real kayaking skills before you venture out.
Here are some of our lessons that teach critical skills:- Recreational Kayaking

After learning some paddling skills, fishing from a kayak can be safe. Here are a few tips to ensure that you have a great experience out on the water.
- Get to know your kayak before you take it out fishing. Take it out and climb all over it. Capsize it and practice re-entering it from deep water.
- Dress for emersion. Know the water temperature and dress to swim.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and rash guards even on overcast days.
- Take along safety equipment like a bulge pump and paddle float (even if you are using a sit-on-top), Signaling and communication and lighting are also important.
- Always wear your PFD. The more you wear it, the less you know you have it on.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Check weather wave and surf forecasts before you go out. Don't wait for conditions to exceed your abilities.
- Paddle with a partner. A skilled partner can be a life saver.
- File a float plan. Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back.
- Be sure to have the proper navigational equipment for the body of water you are paddling on (compass, GPS, charts, etc).
- Supplemental Floatation is an important safety addition in any kayak.
- A good First Aid Kit, stored on a dry-bag or dry-box, is essential.
These are only a few safety suggestions. Many more can be found in our classes or in books we stock in our shop.
