If you aren't sure that kayaking is for you or just want to give it a try in a quiet, supportive environment, then you might want to choose from one of the three-hour day hours: Harbor Highlights or Kayak Back to Nature. You will receive just enough instruction on our bay tours to allow you to control your own boat and have a great time as you explore scenic Newport Harbor or Bay.
If you want to try kayaking with your younger children, but feel you could use a little help with the whole kids-in-boats thing, then our Family Kayaking class is a great low-stress starter.
If paddling in open-ocean or other more challenging conditions is definitely in your future, or even if you only intend to paddle in the bay, then First Strokes - The Basics and Beyond is the ideal entry-level instruction class for you. First Strokes will allow you to enjoy the bays and harbors, plus give you the skills you will need to continue onto Sea Legs I and the rest of our program, or transition into the Open Comprehensive Weekend. If you haven't paddled for awhile, then First Strokes may be a perfect tune-up for you to refresh on basic skills and technique.
Once you've completed First Strokes and paddled enough to build endurance and confidence, Sea Legs I is a wonderful way to expand your skills and subsequently advance onto Sea Legs II.
The Open Water Comprehensive is the lesson to choose if you want to combine the skill-building of First Strokes, Sea Legs I and Sea Legs II all into one productive and high-energy weekend that will prepare you quickly for open-water adventure
Having completed Sea Legs II or the Open Water Comprehensive, you may be ready for Surf Zones, where you can learn to handle the breaking waves during beach launches and landings, and sharpen all the skills you've gained up to that point.
Rock Garden Paddling introduces you to safety issues and boat-handling techniques that become important when paddling near shore in waves and surf. Wild and wooly, it's so much fun that you'll wonder if it's legal! Also at any time, Rolling Class is an appropriate way to gain even more skills and confidence once you have acquired the basics. Rolling is not essential while paddling on warm, protected waters, but is a vital skill in rougher and colder conditions. A solid roll will boost your confidence on the water, develop your skills, and maximize the fun that comes with kayaking.
Regardless of your skill level, if you have completed First Strokes and you are looking for some expert help with certain elements of your kayaking skills, but feel our regular scheduled classes are too generic for your needs, consider our Personal-Choice Group Lessons as a way to get some targeted instruction.
